I’m officially a YoGeek!

So Dave Malkoff from CBS2 news showed up to my class to interview me about online fitness ๐Ÿ™‚ How cool is that? Well, we had a great time chatting and I showed him how I did my stuff (podcasting and the like), with my MacBook, my iRiver, and my lav mic. He and his camera man then filmed about 45 min of my yoga class at Swerve Studio. Since he asked me to, I proceeded to record my class, the way that I would normally do it, for my weekly yoga podcast. So there I was now, with 2 mics on me, one, my normal awkward way (with my iRiver on my arm and the lav mic clipped to the front of my top) and then a huge mic box thing inside the pocket of my lovely still crop pants, and another fancy lav mic wrapped around the back of me, and onto the right strap of my top.

Kinda hard to ignore

Still harder to ignore, the fact that the mighty camera man (he was great!) wove in and out of my students and myself carrying this heavy, enormous camera, as if it was a little camcorder. For some reason there was a moment where I actually sort of forgot he was there, as much as one can, and the class became ‘my class’ again. All I thought of was how to help my students stay comfortable being watched. I think that’s one of the hardest things to do, so the way to do it was to simply guide them there. I did my best. This class will be Episode 39, so that y’all can take the class along with them!

Dave told me that I was going to be on the 6 o’clock news ๐Ÿ™‚ yeay!!!!

Yea, not so much…as fate would have it some loon decided to make the police chase him all over the freeways, right at 6pm, so I was not on tv ๐Ÿ˜ฆ the loon was…or at least until today. Don’t know when the story aired but now the video is up on the website, you can check it out HERE

YoGeek Chillout after a Setback: Back to Basics and Breathe

So I had it all planned, this weekend I was going to get lots of footage for this show! Lots of it, thought it would be easy.

Not so much ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

I was so disappointed and quite defeated, but really that’s what it’s all about, allowing yourself to step in fully and whatever happens is part of your yoga. How do we then make the best choice, to the best of our ability. The time that I had at the studio was truly almost over and I felt that nothing that I had shot was remotely what I wanted to offer. It was at that moment that I decided that I just needed to breathe and chill out, so here it is…5 min of movement a little bit of quiet time to pay attention to the basics and breathe.

Once I opened my eyes and once again stepped into the world, I felt so much better, knowing that perfection lies in the imperfection, and that it’s there that we are given the Grace to be the best that we can, all the time, even if it’s not what you imagined it would be!

Booty Kickin’ Sculpt on a Thursday Afternoon

I so got my booty kicked.

Let me just tell you now, full disclosure, I work for Swerve Studio, the studio that I went to today. I teach yoga there MWF at 7:30am and have taught there since 2003. I can take free classes at the studios where I work, hence I can take free classes at Swerve. Given this information, one would think that I go there all the time. Yea, no such luck. I can count on one hand the classes that I have taken at Swerve in the past 4 yrs. That’s the sort of the curse of the teacher (at least in the world of health and fitness), you teach more than you are able to take, but that’s another post ๐Ÿ˜‰

So, since I started this little journey of the YoGeek Workout, I decided to make it a priority to experience as many ways to experience fitness as I could. Today, it was Booty Kickin’ Sculpt with Gillian Clark founder of Yoga Booty Ballet.

The funniest thing about this, is that I keep thinking that I’m in shape, and I keep being reminded that, no, that’s not the case!

The class was so much fun and soooo hard for me! It was full of fantastic women (gentlemen, you are welcome, mind you) all glowing with beauty and life from the inside out. There was such joy for working out in that class, not this manic self involved do it or loose it energy that I tend to feel from gyms and gym group classes. Gillian was delightful. She kept the energy going with lightness, brightness, wisdom and a deep sense of humor. We began by doing and energetic quick warm up, full of dance moves and funky beats. We then continued to do what it seemed to me like endless repetitions working with body toning bars and hand weights. We worked the majority of the upper body muscles, deltoids, pecs, biceps, rhomboids and of course the bottom half of the body, quads, glutes, outerhips and inner thighs. There were many times where I just had to stop. I felt that my muscles just were not up to the task. I did my best to move my feet to the beat, but gotta tell y’all, even through the exhaustion, I had a great time.

What made the class special was Gillian herself. As she teaches there is an exuberance that comes from her, a true zeal for tasting life at it’s fullest. She is ALIVE. She is uncensored. Her heart is pure sunshine. As she was doing the class with us, she spoke practically the whole time, either leading the class, or giving us incredible tips about health, fitness, environmental issues, love, books, anatomy, food, seriously, I felt like I needed to take notes. Her brilliant musings were welcomed and wanted given what we were doing with our bodies ๐Ÿ˜‰ It was her personality that made this class so deeply enjoyable, even though, it seems to me I’m going to be mighty sore tomorrow!

Gillian spoke of the 5 things that are necessary for fitness: strength, flexibility, endurance, cardiovascular health, and that whole 30% fat or less thing (I know that there is a technical term for this, but just cannot recall it right now.) I thought about these 5 things and I recognized that there are at least 2 that I never address, and those 2 are the ones that are kicking my behind right now: endurance and cardiovascular health. I know that I am flexible ( I should be practicing yoga and teaching it and all) and given my yoga practice I have built quite a bit of strength, which I’m very proud off. Part of the fact that the class was so hard is that it required endurance, to keep going, to strive through, not using momentum but an inner strength. I fell short, and recognized that. I also can feel that my heart needs to be worked out. It’s so strange that even though I bike so much around town, I never push myself to a place where I make my heart beat faster. I bike at a pace that is necessary to get me from point a to point b. Biking is not my workout, and I have never viewed it in that way, so I’m careful as to how long it takes me to get to my locations and choose not to exceed the speed that is necessary to get there, so I have built up this rhythm, internally, where I don’t work harder than necessary. This process has been truly humbling.

This class once again gave me more, there’s always more, and I’m happy to meet the challenge ๐Ÿ™‚

Truly worth it!

It’s all about the Vastus Medialis

I pondered what running for 12 min, that’s all, 12 min would feel like in my body. I bike about 40 miles a week, for biking around LA is my only form of transportation. Well, actually I also walk and take public transpo. Anyway, given that info, I was so amazed that the one and only muscle that was really, I mean really sore was the mighty vastus medialis, a quadriceps muscle.


Why the quadriceps? I mean I use the heck out of that muscle every single day, but goes to show that the muscle itself has parts that are not used. The quadriceps femoris is broken down into 4 fantastic muscles, the vastus lateralis, the vastus medialis, the vastus intermedius and the rectus femoris. They are primarily knee extensors (or stretching the leg straight.) They are incredibly important towards maintaining structural stability of the knee joint.

Given the fact that I am in constant awe of the human body and it is my business to observe the body so closely to facilitate alignment, I’ve come to a very simple conclusion: any movement that is repetitive in any way builds habits in our body that at times may not be completely in balance. Certain muscles that we use daily, get stronger, daily. Those that we happen to gloss over, maybe not even consciously only see the light of day when we attempt to do something new.

Something new, regardless of what it is, physically, is necessary to maintain our health. It can be as simple as walking up the stairs instead of taking the elevator, jumping rope, sprinting instead of jogging, yoga instead of tae bo, boxing instead of yoga, leading with your left leg instead of your right.

Simple. I’m sure nothing new, but it’s oh so nice to remember ๐Ÿ™‚

May we always be surprised by the beauty of our bodies, and may we continue to use them in ways that really show how truly divine they are.
